Optional Tours:

Participants of the Advanced Reactors Technical Summit V & Showcase will have the opportunity to take part in one of the optional tours (1. Texas A&M's Nuclear Science Center's TRIGA Reactor*; 2. Thermal Hydraulic Research Laboratory; 3. Fuel Cycle and Materials Laboratory) on Thursday, Feb. 22 following the Summit. Participants can sign up for one of the optional tours when registering for the Advanced Reactors Technical Summit V.

About The Tours

1. TRIGA Reactor*

The centerpiece of the Nuclear Science Center is a 1 megawatt TRIGA (Testing, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics) reactor, an open "swimming pool"-type research reactor cooled by natural convection providing passive and inherent safety. The core consists of cylindrical fuel elements reflected with graphite. For more information, click here.

* Please note: The NSC's TRIGA Reactor tour will require advance security screening. Participants will need to complete the attached form, found here, and return to Tami Hollar (t-hollar@tamu.edu) and Stephanie Czajkowski (sac@tamu.edu) for submission at least 7 days (20 days for foreign nationals) prior to the start of the Summit.

2. Thermal Hydraulic Research Laboratory

The Thermal-Hydraulic Research Laboratory serves the nuclear industry by performing fundamental and applied research on single- and two-phase flow, and multiphase flow phenomena.  The laboratory hosts numerous phenomenological, separate effects, and integral effects test facilities, serving the research community in three main subject areas:  Light Water Reactors, Advanced Reactors and High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors.  The Laboratory has active partnerships and collaborations with national and international universities, research laboratories, and industry, and has contributed to solutions for issues facing the nuclear industry.  For more information, click here.

3. Fuel Cycle and Materials Laboratory

The Fuel Cycle and Materials Laboratory is led by Professor Sean McDeavitt.  FCML addresses a number of current issues and technical areas in the nuclear fuel cycle. These include material and chemical processing, advanced fuels and materials, and waste mobilization.  The Laboratory has a unique set of capabilities and equipment that can study a full range of technologies ranging from the fabrication and manufacture of advanced fuel concepts through processing of these components to the disposition at the back end of the fuel cycle.  The Laboratory works with a number of private sector companies and federal agencies. For more information, click here.
