XXII. HOW THE NUCLEAR FUEL SUPPLIER COMMUNITY IS WORKING TO MEET THE CHALLENGE OF PROVIDING FUEL FOR THE FUTURE ADVANCED REACTOR FLEET

The recent update to the Department of Energy Vision for clean energy and economic opportunities noted the goal to develop advanced nuclear fuel cycles.  The objective includes addressing gaps in the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain.  Operating reactors would benefit from the value of higher enriched fuel (High Assay Low Enriched Uranium) and many of the emerging advanced reactor designs will require enrichments as his as 19.75% U235.   A July 2020 letter to the Secretary of Energy noted that demand could be >2 metric tons of uranium (MTU) as early as this year with a need as high as >500 MTU per year in 10 years.  This panel brings together both suppliers and developers to highlight the progress to date and to provide us insight into the steps underway to supply higher enriched fuel in its various forms.
